Online Access and the Flipped Classroom

For some units, the Perth Reach Ahead program will be using a flipped-learning model.  Students will need to access lessons online from home so that they can practice the concepts in class.  In addition, most course communication will take place via the edmodo website or app. Because of this, a significant portion of your student's work in this program will take place online.  It is very important that your child have access to the internet outside of school hours if they are going to make the most of the course and its resources.

If you do not have access to the internet at home, your student will need to arrange time to access the internet during daytime classroom hours, either during recess or library visits.  Alternatively, high-speed internet access and computer time is available at the Perth Union Library during regular library hours (high-speed available 24 hours) or at the YAK Youth Centre during their afternoon drop-in hours.

If you are having trouble finding a way to get connected, consider using the new 211 service by dialing 211 from any phone.  It is a toll-free call that will connect you with an operator who has access to a county-wide social-services directory and can help you to find internet access for your student.  It is available 24 hours a day in over 100 languages.

Getting Actively Involved

The best way for you to help your student experience success in the program is to be actively involved.  Use your child's Edmodo Parent code to join our course website.

Getting on Edmodo

Edmodo is a free and secure learning network for teachers, students, and schools.  It provides a safe way for teachers and students to connect, share content, access homework, participate in discussions, manage due dates, and receive class information.

Edmodo is accessible online and through any mobile device with Internet capabilities – including free apps for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android devices.  Students can access their account from any mobile device or computer, and set up notifications within Edmodo to receive alerts/reminders via text or e-mail.

Edmodo will not be used as a social network like Facebook or MySpace.  This tool will be used strictly for educational purposes.

Parents should sign up for a parent account that is linked to your student's account.  It will help keep you informed of due dates, assignments, grades, school events, important resources, and any direct communication between your child and their teacher.  To access your unique parent's code, look for it in the bottom-right hand corner of your child's edmodo group page.

If you are new to edmodo, You are strongly encouraged to review the edmodo parent manual.

Stress Management and Support

The Perth Reach Ahead program can be very demanding and students often find it difficult to balance the stresses of completing their final year of elementary school, competing in spring athletics, extra-curriculuar activities and preparing for graduation while participating in our after-school program.  One of the best ways you can support your child at home is by helping them to manage their time, talking to them about their work, and by keeping in contact with the instructors.  By encouraging your child as a full-time learner, you can help them to take the challenge head-on.

Student Success and Progress Monitoring

Even though the course takes place at PDCI, Your students will be earning their credit through the UCDSB's T.R. Leger school.  The admin and support staff at PDCI will not have any information about your child's progress or credit.  If you have questions about your child's progress, you are encouraged to contact the instructors or the Principal Daryl Kelly.

Report Cards

T.R. Leger will not distribute an official report card for your child, but you will recieve an unofficial midterm report on March 27th 2014, and  then a final report on June 12th.  If your child is absent on the day that final reports are distributed, a report can be requested by email.   At the end of the course, the instructors will recommend students for credit and provide marks; the principal Daryl Kelly will enter the credit and final mark on your student's transcript, and it should show up on their high school transcript within a few months of their grade 9 year.

Progress Monitoring

Parents are encouraged to turn on edmodo notifications so that they are aware of their student's upcoming assignments and projects.  If you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress during the course, you are encouraged to contact the instructors by email.

The mission of the Perth Reach Ahead program is to not only build strong learners, but to build and nurture strong community members.  Your student will work with the rest of the class to develop and implement a community action project while building the skills they need to meet the GLS1O learning strategies curriculum expectations.  Upon successfull completion of the course, they will be granted a GLS1O high school credit.  If you are interested in more information about the program goals and philosophy, check out the "community" page on this site.
